Jamaica chosen as Golf Destination Of The Year
Jamaica has attracted a lot of positive reviews in the last month. Just a few weeks after it scooped multiple honours at the WTA (World Travel Awards) held in London, it has emerged that the Caribbean destination has been chosen as the Golf Destination of The Year for both the Caribbean and Latin American sector.
The award was voted for by no less than 300 members of the IAGTO (International Association of Golf Tour Operators). Jamaica Tourist Board (JTB) regional director, Elizabeth Fox accepted the accolade at Malaga, Spain during the 2009 International Golf Travel Market (IGTM) held last week.
The annual conference recognizes leading hotels, resorts and golf courses every year.
Each year, the IGTM annual conference brings together international golf tour operators and the meetings industry with leading hotels, resorts and golf courses of the world to conduct business and grow the industry. This leading trade show highlights and honors top golf travel suppliers, destinations and services.
Jamaica’s Director of Tourism, John Lynch, said the award confirms the Caribbean destination’s claim to be an excellent golfing destination. He added that the JTB has, along with its many partners, put forth a number of initiatives to position Jamaica as the most coveted golf destination in the Caribbean.
Jamaica boasts 12 extensive courses over the expanse of its island, and has in the last few years attracted high-profile golfing names. Championships held on Jamaican golfing soil have included Mazda Champions (LPGA Tour), Johnnie Walker World Cup of Golf (PGA Tour), Shell’s Wonderful World of Golf, and Jamaica Classic (LPGA Tour).
